Star & Sceptre, Sovereign Saviour

Youth & Arts Pastor Curtis Alexander

Dec 19/10- Church On The GO

Psa 19:1 ESV To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Psa 50:6 ESV The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah

Balaam Saw JESUS:

Num 24:17 ESV

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.

Num 24:17 KJV

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

Num 24:17 CEV "What I saw in my vision hasn't happened yet. But someday, a king of Israel will appear like a star. He will wipe out you Moabites and destroy those tribes who live in the desert.

STAR” In the Hebrew is:

H3556 ko-kawb'

Probably from the same as H3522 (in the sense of rolling) or H3554 (in the sense of blazing); a star (as round or as shining); figuratively a prince: - star ([-gazer]).

H3554 is kaw-vaw'

A primitive root; properly to prick or penetrate; hence to blister (as smarting or eating into): - burn.

Jesus was pricked and pierced for us! He is the Star-Saviour

SCEPTRE” in the Hebrew language is:

H7626 shay'-bet

From an unused root probably meaning to branch off; a scion, that is, (literally) a stick (for punishing, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.) or (figuratively) a clan: - X correction, dart, rod, sceptre, staff, tribe.

Jesus is the Ruler and the Authority. He is our LORD- the Sceptre

Initial fulfilment of Balaam's prophecy is found in 2 Samuel 8

2Sa 8:1 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

2Sa 8:2 And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.

2Sa 8:11 These also King David dedicated to the LORD, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued,

2Sa 8:12 from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

2Sa 8:13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

2Sa 8:14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the LORD gave victory to David wherever he went.

David prophecies about his coming Heir, Jesus Christ who is THE STAR whom God puts in PLACE as SOVEREIGN KING:

Psa 8:2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

Psa 8:3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

Psa 8:4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

Psa 8:5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.

Psa 8:6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,

The Final and Complete Fulfillment of Num 24:17 is found in JESUS CHRIST- descendant of King David and rightful heir of the Sceptre. Christ's birth is signified by an actual STAR in the heavens, shining on Him. This is the same star which Balaam saw in the spirit, and prophesied about roughly 1400 years earlier. This is the star which led the wisemen to the child, Jesus.

Is. 60:1 KJV "Arise SHINE: for thy LIGHT is come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee”

The Wise Men Saw JESUS:

Mat 2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,

Mat 2:2 saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."

Mat 2:3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;

Mat 2:4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

Mat 2:5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

Mat 2:6 "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" [Note: this verse shows the STAR and SCEPTRE prophecy in the form of a ruler (Sceptre), Jesus who is also Shepherd (Star) to the sheep!]

Mat 2:7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.

Mat 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him."

Mat 2:9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.

Mat 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

Mat 2:11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Heb 2:9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Heb 2:10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Heb 2:11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

Heb 2:12 saying, "I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise."

Heb 2:13 And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Behold, I and the children God has given me."

Heb 2:14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

Heb 2:15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Heb 2:16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

Heb 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Col 2:15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

1Co 15:24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.

1Co 15:25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

1Co 15:26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

These enemies and rulers he defeated were spiritual ones. He did not come to destroy Rome, as some people of the day thought. Rome was oppressive as it ruled over the Jews, but that was not God's mission for Jesus. He came to destroy the devil, sin, and death. He did so to make us FREE!

Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Rev 20:14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

The STAR is Prophetic of Christ's FIRST coming, His humble Birth, and His servant-work of salvation.

Jesus Christ IS the STAR of our life, our light and salvation! He is Saviour.

The SCEPTRE is Prophetic of Christ's SECOND coming, His Kingly return with the saints, to destroy the wicked, and reward His saints on earth.

Jesus Christ is the SCEPTRE of our life, our Sovereign king and ruler. He is Sovereign Lord.

Jesus is Saviour (Star) and Sovereign (Sceptre).

Therefore there are Three important SIGHTINGS of Star and Sceptre in the BIBLE:

  1. Balaam the prophet – He saw STAR and SCEPTRE, prophetic of Jesus. Num. 24:17

  2. The wisemen – They saw STAR and SCEPTRE, in a Child, Jesus. Mat. 2:2,11

  3. The church (“we see him...”) – The church sees STAR and SCEPTRE, in Jesus Christ – exalted, fully grown, victorious, fully man, fully God. Heb 2:9

Are you born again, and part of the spiritual family, the church?

Do you see Jesus as BOTH the merciful Saviour (Star) and the mighty Sovereign Lord (Sceptre)?

Some people only see one side or the other, but there is no such thing as a one-sided coin! He is BOTH! Star – Saviour and Sceptre - Sovereign

1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

Rev 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

Psa 110:2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

Php 2:8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Php 2:9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

Php 2:10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Php 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Eze 21:26 (KJV) Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high.

Eze 21:27 I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him. [Note: Jesus is the ONE Whose Right It Is!]

Notice here that the lowly (Baby Jesus) is exalted – He rises up like the star which the wisemen saw rise up.

Gen 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Christmas is to celebrate Jesus Christ's coming as BOTH Star and Sceptre!

Mat 2:2 saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."
