1 - INTRODUCTION
Blessings in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ! If you are on the Board or in Leadership here at Church On The GO, or you have just joined the team, then congratulations! You are part of God's work in these last days. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and we, as the leadership team, are here to demonstrate and teach that Kingdom and its power. We are here to love, lead, protect, grow, and equip the members of our local church-family, Church On The GO. Our Vision, as written by our Lead Pastor Rev. Stephen Coates, is three-fold.
CHURCH ON THE GO – OUR VISION
THE LOCAL CHURCH: Is a spiritual family of those "Born from Above" (See 1Pet. 2:9-10; Acts 9:31; Mark 3:13-15; John 3:7) Gen. 18:19 KJV says: “ For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”
SHORT TERM MISSIONS: Now is God’s time for the indigenous peoples and their diaspora to bless, pray, encourage and support missionary outreach.(See Acts 1:8; KJV)
RECOVERING GENERATIONAL BLESSING: “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet [have ye] not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.”
[1 Corinthians 4:15-17; KJV]
It is for this vision and purpose that our leadership and board members work together. The purpose of this manual is so that we may all be of one heart and mind with regards to our ethics, ministry practice, and mode of operation. Thus, our work for this vision will be clear, unified and unhindered. It is just like the Apostle Paul stated: If you desire to participate as a leader or board member here at Church On The GO, you desire a “good work”.
1 Timothy 3:1 (in several translations) says:
“This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” (King James Version)
"This is a true saying, If any man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a worthy work." (Geneva Version)
“This is a statement that can be trusted: If anyone sets his heart on being a bishop, he desires something excellent.” (God's Word Translation)
“It is true that anyone who desires to be a church official wants to be something worthwhile.” (Contemporary English Version)
“THE SAYING is true and irrefutable: If any man [eagerly] seeks the office of bishop (superintendent, overseer), he desires an excellent task (work).” (Amplified Bible)
“The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.” (English Standard Version)
“This is a trustworthy saying: 'If someone aspires to be an elder, he desires an honorable position.'” (New Living Translation)
I want to encourage you this day- as the leaders and board members of this church, you are doing something that is undeniably:
good
worthy
excellent
worthwhile
noble
honorable
There is a cost to following Jesus, especially as a leader or board member. However, His awesome reward is eternal and weighty.
Mat 16:24 “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (KJV) (Read 1Cor. 9 - a leader's lifestyle of “surrender”.)
Mat 25:23 “His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (KJV)
2Cor 4:17 “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;” (KJV)
In other translations, 2 Cor. 4:17 says:
“These little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our troubles seem like nothing.” (CEV)
“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,”(ESV)
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (NIV)
The following sections contain the details to: 1) Your benefits as part of the team, 2) our code of practice for Leaders/Elders/Pastors, 3) our code of practice for our Board 4) A word about resignation and 5) our church's broader involvement in the Christian community. This information comes from previous foundational studies on “Ministry Manners”, and builds upon those thoughts. This code is much like the Jerusalem council's “code of practice”, a letter written by the early church elders to strengthen and unify the gentile Christians of the time. See Acts 15:22-31. Like the Christian leaders of that day, we as leaders must also speak and act with unity. So, let's work faithfully and prayerfully for JESUS, here at Church On The GO.

THE CLUSTER IS LIKE A SPIRITUAL FAMILY!!

new wine is found in the cluster, and they say, 'Do not destroy it,
for there is a blessing in it,' so I will do for
my servants' sake, and not destroy them all. Num 2:2

his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses.
They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side.
Psa 68:6 K.J.V. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry [land].

Eph 3:15; E.S.V. from whom every family* in heaven and on earth is named,
Footnote: * Or fatherhood; the Greek word patria is closely related to the word for Father in verse 14
2 - YOUR BENEFITS
Working as a leader or board member here at Church On The GO is a wonderful privilege. Not many get an opportunity to volunteer like this. Not only do you get to serve in ministry, but we train you at the same time. So you don't need to spend years in a Bible seminary – you get to work for Jesus TODAY! This ministry is not to be abused, or thought of as a “right” you own, but rather, think of it as a precious talent your Lord has entrusted to you. It is truly a privilege to be called “pastor”, “leader” or “board member”. You will also be looked up to and respected by our members. You should thank the Lord every day for your role as a leader/board member. Below are some of the amazing benefits we offer to our leadership:
1) High-quality, personalized
ministry training on site! Our meetings are less structured,
allowing for more personalized interaction. Pastoral Meetings happen
right at the church, so you don't have to travel somewhere else. We
attempt to train people the
way Jesus trained His disciples- with personal, enriched
relationships to Him as the focus, not the knowledge. Rather than
sending them to school, Jesus had His disciples follow Him. They
simply lived with Jesus, and traveled with Him, learning and
participating in His ministry along the way. Knowledge, authority,
and power came after they were in right
relationship to their Mentor and ministry Father, JESUS.
Mar
3:13-15 KJV “And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth [unto
him] whom he would: and they came unto him. And he ordained twelve,
that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to
preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out
devils:”
We wish to have right relationships with each developing leader, and be there for him/her. We are here to help you in all your ministry challenges, whether they be theological, practical, or otherwise. This will ensure you have proper direction, encouragement, and ability to go forward in your call! Through this relationship to the Class Leaders, you will experience a new level of authority and power!
2) Excellent theological materials and books provided at little cost to you. The church provides all the necessary reading materials you are going to need, and even supplies you with special study Bibles at a minimal cost to you. (Two Bible versions for credentialed Leaders, and one version for those on the board). We work through some challenging and exciting doctrines, so be ready to study and think!
3) The privilege quality learning, without the high tuition fees of seminary. Many churches require you to go to school and pay thousands of dollars before you can even begin serving at their church. We eliminate the cost of university tuition, and offer you valuable experience, insight, revelation, and time at a minimal cost.
4) You get sponsored by an established leader in our church. We cover you and back you up with our own name and offer you spiritual sonship after the pattern of Jesus and His disciples. This privilege is not to be taken lightly or abused, since we are offering our reputation in order to build you up.
5) Through our sponsorship you can apply for credentials at Anchor Ministerial Fellowship. This privilege gives you a legal and ministerial covering through a government-recognized fellowship that's more widespread than our local church. It also increases your connections. Should Anchor choose to give you a license, you may need to do a little bit of reading/writing, as per their requirements. Do not worry if they choose not to grant you a licence at the time. You still get to maintain your level of involvement at our church, and you can always apply for credentials again later.
6) You get the privilege to speak and preach at our church on a regular basis (as a credentialed leader only). We offer live ministry opportunities that you do not get in seminary or Bible college. Once we see that you are established in our doctrine and statement of faith, and that you can be counted upon, we will eventually open the pulpit to you and ask you to share on regular intervals. Your name will begin appearing on the calendar.
7) You get the privilege of participating and traveling in short term missions from time to time. This is as the Holy Spirit leads, with the prayerful and financial support of our church behind us. Talk to the Lead Pastor of the church for more information on this.
8) You get to minister to and pray for members of our church on a regular basis. Our members will look up to you for spiritual support, prayer, and direction.
9) We as leaders also minister to each other and pray for each other. You will receive plenty of prayer, love, and support from us each service. We seek to encourage and bless each other as leaders.
Here are some key Scriptures about our “privilege”, as quoted from the New Living Translation of the Bible:
- Eph. 3:7 “By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been given the privilege of serving him by spreading this Good News”
- Phlp. 1:29 “For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.”
- 1 Pet. 4:16 “But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!”
You are called by Jesus' Name to be a leader here at Church On The GO. So, press into your destiny using these wonderful privileges from the Heavenly Father.
3 - LEADERS' AND PASTORS' CODE OF PRACTICE
A leader is an elder or pastor in our church who holds credentials, is mature, and is a regular speaker at our church. They lead in some general or specific area of ministry. They are gifted as one or more of the following: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. As such, they are entrusted with the office of that position and are looked to by the entire congregation for support, direction and wisdom from Christ. Second Timothy 2:5 ESV says: “An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.” Let's run by the code, and be leaders in this race of faith. Get crowned by JESUS!
Habakkuk 2:2 ESV says: “And the Lord answered me: 'Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.'”. Below, I have written a code of practice plainly to help each leader run the race of faith at Church On The GO.
As one of our Leaders experiencing all of the benefits and privileges we offer, you are expected to:
Be faithful and loyal to: (a) the Lord Jesus Christ, (b) to your own family, (c) to Church On The GO, which is your local church and (d) to Anchor Ministerial Fellowship. This is a large topic but it can be summarized by saying that nothing takes the place of these 4 priorities in your life. Not only be faithful, but promote that faithfulness as an example our members can follow.
Hold credentials with Anchor Ministerial Fellowship. Anchor is a Christian Credentialing Body recognized by the government which issues licenses based on sponsorship. This gives you both legal, and spiritual protection from people who challenge your right to teach and minister. This license shows everyone that you are responsible and accountable. If anyone inquires as to your authority, you can tell them that you are backed by a ministerial full of Godly men and women and your leadership is recognized by other mature Christian leaders. Remember that you need to pay your license renewal fee once a year, usually in November/December. Ask the Pastor for help on getting started with this, or go to Anchor's website: www.anchorministerial.org
Be accountable to, and take direction from the Lead Pastor of Church On The GO. Here are some key verses from the English Standard Version of the Bible:
1
Thessalonians 5:12-13; ESV says,
“We ask
you, brothers, to respect
those who labor among you and
are over
you in the Lord and admonish
you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be
at peace among yourselves.”
Titus 3:1-2 ESV says,
“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every
good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.”
Be careful not to give even the appearance of disloyalty or unfaithfulness in any of the areas mentioned in point 1. This means using wise judgment when dealing with: members of the opposite sex, other religions, or other local churches within Newmarket and Aurora. If your involvement in any of these areas could be even remotely used against you, then apply wisdom and stay away. Think about the “perception” of your actions. Before you act, ask yourself:
“Will others perceive me to be faithful in taking such an action, or unfaithful?” It does not matter if your intentions are pure- if an action simply “appears” to be disloyal, then someone
may speak against you. I say this for your protection. Even if it means we forfeit some of our individual “rights” (see 1 Cor. 9), we must protect the anointing and office of ministry given to us. By protecting yourself, you are actually protecting the church's reputation too. This is one big reason why it is costly to follow the Lord as a church leader/elder. It requires discipline to stay focused on our specific call at Church On The GO. You represent not only Jesus, but also
Church On The GO, which is our spiritual family and church within the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Remember this verse: 1Thess. 5:21-22 “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (KJV) Our leadership team has agreed that if you are attending a one-time special event at a church such as a wedding or funeral within Newmarket/Aurora, this is ok and understandable (as long as it doesn't conflict with our church schedule). But we ask that you do not attend other regular church services in Newmarket or Aurora, because you are a credentialed leader of our church. If you are visiting a church that's in a different area (ex. Toronto, Markham, etc.) and we have nothing scheduled at our church, then this is ok too. Just remember to use wisdom at all times. To summarize why we as leaders must limit ourselves in this way, here are five major reasons:
a) 1 Thes. 5:22 – It does not look good- you look out of place if you show up at other churches besides our own.
b) James 1:8 – Your loyalties will begin to get divided if you attend two churches. This is a form of dualism.
c) James 4:8, Mat. 6:24 – Divided loyalties make one unstable in everything. Just like Jesus said you cannot serve both God and money, you also cannot be a faithful servant at two local church families giving 100% to both at the same time. A person will end up serving one more, and forgetting the other. Dualism is a divided heart, the opposite of loyalty.
d)We do not go to other local churches out of honour and respect for them. We want all churches in Newmarket/Aurora to flourish and grow, not just our own. Therefore, we respect the fact that having our leaders/board members showing up in the pews of other local churches' services will just bring confusion and/or suspicion. Rom 2:10 (KJV) “But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:” In this verse, God wants to honour every good work, not just our own. He honours and gives dignity to all genuine ministries in Newmarket, and in Aurora.
Part of that package is peace: Peace with Jesus, and peace with each other.
e) Finally, Jesus limited Himself and His disciples geographically. See Mat. 10:5-6; Mat. 15:24; and Acts 16:6. *(See Note at end of chapter for more study material on The Local Church)
Use mints, water, and tissues when needed.
Avoid copying someone else's ministry style, whether they be a guest speaker, a preacher on TV, or another in-house speaker. Be yourself when you minister, pray for others, speak, or serve. You were created unique in God's image and so He wants you to Be Yourself in Christ!
Operate with thankfulness in the gifts God has given to you. Avoid trying to specialize in gifts that are not your specialty. If you are a gifted evangelist, do not try to operate full time in
the office of a prophet. In this example, your office is that of an evangelist. Trying to be
someone you are not is a fruit of covetousness, so remember to thank Jesus for making you who you are! Remember that your authority comes from God anointing you, so flow with it.
Show up for 3+ services a week out of four: Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Tuesday evening, Thursday night. Be on time, and try to linger and mix with the people before and/or after the service. It is one way to show that you care. NOTE: If you cannot make a specific service (example: Tuesday evenings) on a regular basis due to work, or some other valid reason, please make sure you communicate with the Lead Pastor. We can work with people who can only commit to two services a week. But, as a credential-holding leader, we do expect you to make your best effort to free your time for the services. This is a required sacrifice. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication in this area!
Phone the church ahead of time if you cannot make it to one service (even if you are not the speaker). Email is ok, but phoning works best. As a leader, you must phone the Lead Pastor (or leave a message for him) at the church and tell him each time you cannot make it to a service for an unexpected reason. Every service is different and so we expect fresh communication from you every time you cannot come. People will be asking the pastor about you, so it is good manners to give the pastor something to tell them. If you are planning to be away for a period of time, for a vacation, etc. then tell us ahead of time. If you are scheduled to speak on a certain day or night and cannot keep the commitment anymore, phone ahead by a day or more to make alternate arrangements with the Lead Pastor. The telephone is a basic, yet key component to your leadership. Your excellent communication and attendance helps to qualify you as a leader. However, consistently poor communication or attendance will disqualify you from leadership. For more on this, see the following two points.
Follow through on your commitments. While discretion in your speech is important, what you say is not as important as what you do. Do not talk about or commit to things you are not going to follow through on. If people see that your actions contradict your words, you will lose credibility. It is ok to say “no” to certain projects if you feel it is too much to handle.
Always, always have a way for us to contact you. A phone number with an answering service
that you check regularly, an email address you use frequently, the mailing address where you live- these are important when we need to communicate with you. If you do not show up for three services in a row, then we will try to contact you and verify that you are ok. If we cannot
reach you and you do not phone or show up for three weeks straight, then a vote to remove you from leadership will be held at the next board/leadership meeting. If you only show up at church once every two weeks, then your involvement as a leader will be challenged in the next board meeting. We simply must have stable leadership. This is extremely important.
Speak/Teach/Preach at the Church regularly. Your schedule for preaching can always be
found in the church calendar which is distributed monthly.
Be at the Leadership/Board meetings. They are held quarterly and are usually on the last
Saturday of the month. We discuss all current business, ministry, and financial matters in these meetings.
Attend the Pastoral Development Meetings on a quarterly basis. During this meeting, we discuss, and establish our understanding of advanced doctrines and discuss ministry effectiveness. We read the Bible, and theological books, to teach our position on topics such as: Eschatology (study of end-times), Pneumatology (study of the Holy Spirit), and Ecclesiology (study of the Church). The purpose is to ensure the unity of the leaders/pastors who speak at our church, and to raise up younger leadership who will one day carry on the work of this ministry. If you have theological questions, bring them to the Leaders.
Attend at least one Anchor Ministerial event per year. There are three events that Anchor holds in a year: the Regional Meeting (usually at the end of March), the Conference (end of
May), and a retreat (sometime in the Fall). The retreat usually has a cost to it.
Be willing and ready to serve in the prayer ministry at the front of the church.
Updated Oct 5th 2011 - Dedicate yourself to prayer and the Word of God. This is of great importance. Practice living a holy, acceptable life at the standard called for in Scripture. At Church On The GO, we have decided upon three translations which we will use as our standards in order of preference:
1) The King James Version (KJV) - This authorized version is an older translation going back to 1611. The Hebrew-Greek Keyword Study Bible - Was Revised in 1991
2) The English Standard Version (ESV) The Reformation Study Bible - Copyright 2005
3) The Geneva Bible - (Is an older translation going back to 1560) - Revised and republished in 2010 with modernized spelling. 20% of the Geneva Text was later used within the King James Bible in 1611.
These are the three Biblical standards we use to promote unity of thought and doctrine. (Read Acts 6: 1-4)
Should further commentary be needed, we recommend the pulpit standard of: Matthew Henry's Commentary, first published in 1708. It is essential that we understand the history of the Corporate Body Of Christ in order to have proper revelation for the days ahead.
NOTE: The footnotes of these Bibles and Matthew Henry's commentary are to be taken under the understanding that Salvation is progressive and we are all growing and no one has the complete picture. We believe new revelation of the Holy Spirit can come to us that is confirmed and or affirmed by Scripture. Such revelation can actually go beyond human footnotes. We affirm the foundational truths as expressed, it is God who continues to build His own House.
Maintain confidentiality. If a person shares something with you in private, then keep it private.
Stay within your time limit when speaking. Keep an eye on the clock. Maintain a pace, when sharing, that allows you to mention all of your major points before your time is up. If you do run short on time, then cut your message down to the biggest points, and conclude. This is to help keep the entire service flowing.
Dress appropriately for ministry. Look pleasant, clean, and well-dressed, especially when you are at the front sharing. This is essential if the congregation is to take your ministry seriously. Don't expose too much, and don't be sloppy. Sweat pants, low cut shirts (women), flip flops, mini skirts (women), clothing that is too small for you, and t-shirts which say inappropriate things are all examples of clothing articles not to wear.
As a general rule, men minister to men, and women minister to women. Avoid ministering to the opposite sex in private, particularly if you are married. Romans 13:13 KJV "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying." The old word "Chambering" used here is very descriptive. In the original Greek it is: "koy'-tay" (Strongs #2845) meaning: "From G2749; a couch; by extension cohabitation; by implication the male sperm: - bed, chambering, X conceive." In other words, there is a difference between marriage and cohabitation. The Bible says marriage is right, and calls cohabitation (living together unmarried.) wrong. It is imperative that we as leaders do not practice chambering/cohabitation, or even give the impression of cohabitation/chambering with the opposite sex.
Update: We only welcome people on as leaders if they have not sworn an oath with a secret society. Secrets and confidentiality on a person-to-person basis is not necessarily a bad thing. But clubs and societies that swear by secrecy automatically arouse suspicion. Christ works in the light, and in the open. He does not work in the dark nor does He want us to put our candle under a bushel. The public and transparent work of Christ and His churches is incompatible with a club that refuses to reveal its actions or intents and requires its members to swear to keep club operations a secret. (See St. Mat. 5:34-37) We need to know about the outside involvements and commitments of our leaders so we can identify any conflicts of interest.
Mat 5:34-37 KJV “But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
New Additional Position Or Philosophy In Ministry-
Clarification, August 2010
1) Ministry Helpers (music etc) are NOT Leaders! (See Chapter 7 on “Helpers”)
2) Helpers in music etc. are assisting Leaders
3) Leaders consist of Church Pastors, Ministry Interns and Board Members!
4) Consideration for Leadership positions will be given only to those who have NOT sworn an oath to a secret society, please note you become who your friends are – regular association with such is discouraged.
5) The local Church is the Redeemed, spiritual family in the Holy Nation of God!
6) We desire to reach the lost, but the Redeemed do not become like the lost to reach them!
7) We encourage unbelievers to visit us, we invite them to join the Family of God, through the Redeeming Blood of Jesus Christ!
John 1:12-13 (English Standard Version)
12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born,
not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
8) Our focus is to be above the murky world of secret societies – note:
Hebrews 12 (English Standard Version)
Jesus, Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:21-23 (English Standard Version)
21Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear." 22But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
9) Our focus of ministry to those in secret societies is:
Matthew 10:16 (English Standard Version)
Persecution Will Come
16 "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
10) We overcome and conquer through:
Revelation 12:11 (English Standard Version)
11And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Update: We ask our leaders and board members to honour the 10% tithe principal of Scripture (if earning any sources of income). This is to honour God's Word, and Work at Church On The GO. If we give these tithes, God promises to bless us. Finances are essential to keeping the church operational. This principal is found in - Gen. 14:18-20; Gal. 3:29; Heb. 5:8-10; and Mal. 3:10. We also encourage any free-will offerings that you can give above the standard 10% as a support to the work of God. By obeying the principals of tithes and offerings, you become an example our church members should follow.
Gen 14:18-20 KJV And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Heb 5:8-10 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
July 4 2012 Update:
1. As a doctor patient relationship is deemed inappropriate, so is a pastoral and congregational member relationship deemed inappropriate and risks dismissal.
2. Church On The GO views the Local license as a beginning credential for Directors (those who assist pastors). Church On The GO will no longer recognize holders of the Local License of Anchor Ministerial Fellowship worthy of Pastoral designation.
3. We encourage active involvements in the church as: Helpers, Assistant Directors and Directors – in various areas of church ministry. These people are assistants to the Pastors, but they are not Pastors themselves.
4. Pastors must hold the minimum of a General License with Anchor Ministerial Fellowship. The Anchor Ministerial Structure has 3 licenses. It begins with a Local license, moves up to a General License, and then the highest level is Ordination/Reverend. Each license is not granted automatically, there is an application and interviewing process for each license. For more info, visit their website: www.anchorministerial.org
5. Assistant Directors may also become Church Board Interns for a period of up to two years. Interns do not have a vote on issues but may participate fully in discussions etc.
6. Directors must have a Local License with Anchor Ministerial Fellowship, and may be considered for full Church Board status. The minimum age for a Local License with Anchor Ministerial Fellowship is 17 years of age.
A great way to ensure you are on track with your leadership development, is to check yourself against the Apostle Paul's requirements for leaders found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7.
1Tim. 3:1-7 (KJV) “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient,
not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with
all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and
the snare of the devil.”
Another passage can be found in Titus:
Titus 1:5-9 (KJV) “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”
Spiritual
Leadership in the Family Team Requires:
1. Qualification and development in the character of the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Anointing, gifts, and authority from the Holy Spirit. You must be under authority to have authority.
3. Surrender and sacrifice (after Jesus' model) for the good of your local church family.
*(NOTE for Point 4: Please find further study in The Reformation Study Bible- English Standard Version. Topics include: the "Local Church" on Page 1850; The Cross-shaped camp, The Tabernacle with Jesus at the center and local families on every side (Prophetic of the Body of Christ): Page 197; Each family in their position in the Holy Nation: Numbers 1:52; 2:2, 17; Every leader should “take up his cross” Mat.16:24)
4 - BOARD MEMBERS' CODE OF PRACTICE
A Board Member can be classified biblically as a deacon. They provide a legal covering for our church which, according to the government, is a charity which requires a board. These members are very important because they meet regularly with the Pastors and Leaders to discuss ministry issues, events, finances, and also help to ratify decisions. These people may also have authority to co-sign cheques for the church to allow the payment of bills and expenses. In some cases, a board member may also be a credentialed leader.
As a board member at our church you will be expected to:
Be faithful and loyal to: (a) the Lord Jesus Christ, (b) to your own family, and (c) to Church On The GO, which is your local church. This is a large topic but it can be summarized by saying that nothing takes the place of these 3 priorities in your life. Not only be faithful, but promote that faithfulness as an example our members can follow.
Be accountable to, and take direction from the Lead Pastor of Church On The GO. Here are some key verses from the English Standard Version of the Bible:
1
Thessalonians 5:12-13; ESV says,
“We ask
you, brothers, to respect
those who labor among you and
are over
you in the Lord and admonish
you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be
at peace among yourselves.”
Titus 3:1-2 ESV says,
“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.”
Before you act, ask yourself: “Will others perceive me to be faithful in taking such an action, or unfaithful?” It does not matter if your intentions are pure- if an action simply “appears” to be disloyal, then someone
may speak against you. I say this for your protection. Even if it means we forfeit some of our individual “rights”, we must protect the anointing given to us. By protecting yourself, you are actually protecting the church's reputation too. This is one big reason why it is costly to follow the Lord as a board member at the church. It requires discipline to stay focused on our specific call at Church On The GO. You represent not only Jesus, but also Church On The GO, which is our spiritual family and church within the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Remember this verse: 1Thess. 5:21-22 “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (KJV) Your responsibility in this area is the same as for leaders. We ask you to limit your involvement at other local churches in Newmarket/Aurora to one-time special events like weddings and funerals which occur on days we have nothing scheduled. For full details, read point # 4 of the “Leader's Code”.
Use mints, water, and tissues when needed.
We have four services a week: Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Tuesday evening, Thursday night. We encourage you to attend as many meetings as your work schedule accomodates each week.
We suggest that you be on time, and try to linger and mix with the people before and/or after the service. It is one way to show that you care. NOTE: If you cannot make a specific service (example: Tuesday evenings) on a regular basis due to work, or some other valid reason, please make sure you communicate with the Lead Pastor. As a board member, we thank you for making your best effort to free your time for the services, and for your charitable sacrifice.
We thank you for setting a Saturday morning aside each quarter/season, for assisting the business of the church. God bless you for your generosity with time.
Phone the church ahead of time if you cannot make it to one service
Email is ok, but phoning works best. As a board member, you must phone the Lead Pastor (or leave a message for him) at the church and tell him each time you cannot make it to a service for an unexpected reason. Every service is different and so we expect fresh communication from you every time you cannot come. People will be asking the pastor about you, so it is good manners to give the pastor something to tell them. If you are planning to be away for a period of time, for a vacation, etc. then tell us ahead of time. The telephone is a basic, yet key component to your leadership on the board. Your excellent communication and attendance helps to qualify you as a board member. However, consistently poor communication or attendance will disqualify you from involvement on the board. For more on this, see the following two points.
Follow through on your commitments. While discretion in your speech is important, what you say is not as important as what you do. Do not talk about or commit to things you are not going to follow through on. If people see that your actions contradict your words, you will lose credibility. It is ok to say “no” to certain projects or assignments if you feel it is over
burdening you.
Always, always have a way for us to contact you. A phone number with an answering service
that you check regularly, an email address you use frequently, the mailing address where you live- these are important when we need to communicate with you. If you do not show up for three services in a row, then we will try to contact you and verify that you are ok. If we cannot
reach you and you do not phone or show up for three weeks straight, then a vote to remove you from the board will be held at the next board/leadership meeting. If you only show up at church once every two weeks, then your involvement as a board member will be challenged in the next board meeting. We simply must have stable leadership. This is extremely important.
Be at the Leadership/Board meetings. They are held in the church quarterly and are usually on the last Saturday of the month. We discuss all current business, ministry, and financial matters in these meetings. This is a key area to your involvement at our church. Your input and vote has an impact on the decisions that we make. Your presence helps the church to adhere to government standards (charities must have regular board meetings).
Updated Oct. 5th 2011 - Dedicate yourself to prayer and the Word of God. This is of great importance. Practice living a holy, acceptable life at the standard called for in Scripture. At Church On The GO, we have decided upon three translations which we will use as our standards in order of preference:
1) The King James Version (KJV) - This authorized version is an older translation going back to 1611) The Hebrew-Greek Keyword Study Bible - Was Revised in 1991
2) The English Standard Version (ESV) The Reformation Study Bible - Copyright 2005
If a person or leader shares something with you in private, then keep it private.
Dress appropriately for church. Look pleasant, clean, and well-dressed. This is essential if the
congregation is to take you seriously. Don't expose too much, and don't be sloppy. Sweat pants,
low cut shirts (women), flip flops, mini skirts (women), clothing that is too small for you, and t-shirts which say inappropriate things are all examples of clothing articles not to wear.
Be willing to be a signing authority if needed. In order to pay the rent, expenses, and bills, our church requires the signature of two signing authorities. Pastor Rev. Tracy Coates, who handles the church finances, usually signs the cheques. Then one of the board members (one who has been included on the account already) adds their signature too. For details on this talk to Pastor Tracy.
Update: We only welcome people on as board members if they have not sworn an oath with a secret society. Secrets and confidentiality on a person-to-person basis is not necessarily a bad thing. But clubs and societies that swear by secrecy automatically arouse suspicion. Christ works in the light, and in the open. He does not work in the dark nor does He want us to put our candle under a bushel. The public and transparent work of Christ and His churches is incompatible with a society that refuses to reveal its actions or intents and requires its members to swear to keep club operations a secret. (See St.
2) Helpers in music etc. are assisting Leaders!
15. Update: We ask our leaders and board members to honour the 10% tithe principal of Scripture (if earning any sources of income). This is to honour God's Word, and Work at
Church On The GO.
Heb 5:8-10 Though he [Jesus] were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
16. Update: A Board Intern is a church member which holds a voluntary entry-level position with our board. The position is a temporary trial period with our church's board to see if this is the right position for the volunteer. Should all go well, the pastors/board members will hold a ratification vote to promote the Intern to full board membership. We ask board interns to attend as many church services a week as their work schedule permits, plus we ask that they attend the quarterly leadership/board meeting (held on 4 Saturday mornings a year). Interns are given the chance to offer input at our leadership/board meetings but only full board members can vote on ratification matters, minutes, and financial reports. Aside from this, all other points of the board member's code apply to board interns. Thank you for your gracious donation of time and energy!
Check yourself against these Biblical requirements for deacons.
1Timothy 3:8-13 (KJV) “Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
5 - A WORD ABOUT RESIGNATION
Here at Church On The GO, we believe in finishing our race of faith, enduring the hardships that come along the way. We encourage all of our pastors, leaders, and board members to press on into their destiny in Christ.
2Timothy 2:3-4 KJV “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
The English Standard Version says: “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.”
Therefore, we encourage each leader and board member to keep going, even at the times we “feel” like quitting. Be careful not to quit too hastily. Know The Lord's mind for your calling. The Bible says:
1 Cor. 7:24 “Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.”
In The Amplified Bible: “So, brethren, in whatever station or state or condition of life each one was when he was called, there let him continue with and close to God.”
Resignation is a serious option not to be taken lightly, especially if you are holding credentials with Anchor. If you quit, you cannot re-enter the ministry again easily or quickly if you change your mind. However, if you honestly feel you are going in a different direction than Church On The GO, or you cannot keep up the requirements anymore, then we understand. There is a proper format to resigning. It is as follows:
FOR BOARD MEMBERS:
Simply write a letter stating that you wish to resign from our Church Board. You must sign and date it, then submit it to the Lead Pastor. Should you wish to resign from the Church Board, yet desire to remain part of the congregation at Church On The GO, please set up a meeting to discuss this peaceful and smooth transition with the Lead Pastor and Leadership team.
FOR LEADERS/PASTORS:
Write a letter stating that you wish to resign. Sign it and date it. Submit it to the Lead Pastor. Please note that if you are a leader and you resign, then we will be informing Anchor Ministerial that we can no longer sponsor you for credentials. It will then be up to Anchor Ministerial how they want to handle your membership with them. In this type of situation you should contact Anchor yourself and talk to them about what their policy is for members who no longer have a sponsor. A word of caution: once you give up your credentials, it is much, much harder to get them back again. Please think your actions through. As mentioned above, you may wish to resign, yet remain part of the congregation here. If so, we ask you to set up a meeting to discuss this peaceful and smooth transition with the Lead Pastor and Leadership team.
6 - OUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE BROADER CHURCH COMMUNITY
The leadership at Church On The GO (www.churchonthego.ca) is involved and well-connected with the broader Christian Church and community. This section of the manual is mainly informational and will help you to understand the various connections and relationships our church has across Canada, the USA, and the globe. Currently, we are connected to:
The General Newmarket Ministerial (local) – We receive regular monthly communications from them.
The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada – (www.evangelicalfellowship.ca) We have monthly communications with them.
The GTA Prayer Assembly Mission - Weekly participation and fellowship which occurs at Canada Christian College.
The GTA Charismatic Catholic Prayer Group Movement – Weekly participation and fellowship with some of the leaders of this group.
Anchor Ministerial Fellowship (Based in Ontario) – (www.anchorministerial.org) This is the main ministerial we are committed and accountable to. We have regular communications with them. We participate in their various yearly events and meetings and are also financially committed to them.
Global Network Of Christian Ministries (www.global-ministries.com) Based in the USA – We are committed and accountable to this ministerial as well. They receive financial support from us, and we have regular communications with them.
Revenue Canada – B.H.C.C. Church On The GO - is a Registered Charity. We answer Revenue Canada through our annual accounting and reporting.
Many International Ministries – There are many leaders and ministries across the world whom we communicate with. Some of the places include Ireland, Germany, Africa, and India.
Many Guest Speakers – We invite out-of-town Christian leaders to speak at our church on a regular basis. Many of these leaders originate from other parts of Canada or the world.
7 - A DEFINITION OF CHURCH HELPERS
The purpose of this chapter is to define what a helper is in our church and what is to be expected of them. Helpers are people who assist the leaders and board members at Church On The GO but are not viewed as leaders themselves. The Bible says:
Romans 16:3 KJV “Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus:”
3John 1:8 KJV “We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow helpers to the truth.” (See also Acts 6:1-6 for the the appointment of helpers who can serve tables.) This manual has covered two categories of church workers so far. As a recap:
1) Leaders/Pastors: Those who are credentialed, mature, faithful, and committed at the highest level, Leaders/ Pastors are the authority in the church, directed by the Lead Pastor. They teach, preach and give oversight.
2) Board Members: Also highly committed, faithful, and mature, they give advice and input at the board meetings, and sometimes sign cheques. They usually do not hold credentials or speak at the church.
3) Helpers: A third, and very important, worker in the church is the “Helper”. The helper is not credentialed, is not on the board, and is not a leader. A helper's ministry is simply help the leaders and board members at Church On The GO wherever they can, with whatever skills the Lord has given them. Specifically:
a) Helpers are very precious and valued volunteers, who we need more of at Church On The GO.
b) Helpers are NOT leaders, because they don't hold credentials. Thus they are not in authority to lead or preach. They are NOT required to follow our Leadership Code of Practice. However, in order to effectively “help”, they must follow the directions of their pastor. Also, they must confess Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour.
c) Helpers are encouraged very much to be as faithful in attendance as their leaders are. However they are not required to be at every meeting in order to be called a “Helper”. We are happy to receive the help from people whenever possible. We do not want to exclude someone's help just because they can't participate three times a week. Some help is better than no help. But constant help is the best! Positions are preferably given to helpers who choose Church On The GO as their home church and attend regularly. These people are here more regularly and so they are given the first chance to help in the church over people who are not here as often. Faithfulness is a key factor!
d) Helpers are not on the board, so they do not take part in votes, decisions, or budget discussions. The Board Code does not apply to them because of this, so there are fewer requirements expected of helpers.
e) Here is a partial list of many of the things helpers can do to assist the leadership at Church On The GO: singing, musical instrument playing, evangelism and outreach, assistance with the youth group, janitorial/ church cleanup, technical help, sound board, computer, projection, helping at fellowship lunch, donations of equipment needed. No major commitment is needed, just a loving humble heart, willing to serve God!
f) A helper should be helping with something that suits his or her skill set. Example: People skilled at computers can help with projection, people who can play musical instruments can help with worship. Everyone is good at something! The key is to match the person to the right task, for there is much to do in Jesus Name!
